Youth-led Climate Cardinals Tackle Language Barriers, Employ AI to Globalize Climate Education

When Sophia Kianni visited Iran, she observed a significant lack of climate change information in Farsi. This inspired her to establish Climate Cardinals, an organization dedicated to making climate education accessible to non-English speakers. As the world faces an accelerating climate crisis, the importance of climate education and the role of AI technologies in fighting climate change cannot be understated.

The Barrier of Language

Despite English being the primary language of scientific publications, 80% of the world’s population does not speak it. With over 75% of scientific publications released only in English, a significant portion of the global population is left without access to crucial climate information. Furthermore, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports are only available in the six official United Nations languages, still excluding nearly half of the world’s population. This highlights the urgent need to make climate education accessible to non-English speakers.

Introducing Climate Cardinals

Climate Cardinals is a youth-led organization focusing on translating crucial climate information into multiple languages. The organization aims to empower communities most impacted by climate change through accessible information. By breaking language barriers, Climate Cardinals provides people around the world with the tools and knowledge necessary to understand and combat climate change.

Achievements and Progress

Collaborating with Google Cloud and Translation Hub, Climate Cardinals has achieved notable progress in making climate information universally accessible. The organization translated the synthesis of the IPCC report into over 25 languages, ensuring that more communities gain access to critical climate change knowledge. To date, Climate Cardinals has translated over 500,000 words of crucial climate information into more than 40 languages, spanning various regions and cultures.

The Role of AI Technologies

The organization leverages AI-powered translation tools to speed up the translation process and improve accuracy. This allows more people to access climate education resources in their native languages, empowering them to make informed decisions about climate action. The potential of AI technologies in scaling up climate education efforts and creating global accessibility is immense. With advancements in AI, the possibilities for educating the global population on climate change are unlimited.

In Conclusion

Breaking language barriers is crucial in the global fight against climate change. By embracing AI technology and fostering collaboration, the world can become better educated about the impending climate crisis. Climate Cardinals invites more volunteers to join the global movement, focusing on providing climate education to all, regardless of linguistic differences. Together, we can ensure that knowledge about climate change is universally accessible and empower communities across the globe to take action.

Up until working with Casey, we had only had poor to mediocre experiences outsourcing work to agencies. Casey & the team at CJ&CO are the exception to the rule.

Communication was beyond great, his understanding of our vision was phenomenal, and instead of needing babysitting like the other agencies we worked with, he was not only completely dependable but also gave us sound suggestions on how to get better results, at the risk of us not needing him for the initial job we requested (absolute gem).

This has truly been the first time we worked with someone outside of our business that quickly grasped our vision, and that I could completely forget about and would still deliver above expectations.

I honestly can't wait to work in many more projects together!
