Stability AI has officially announced the release of StableStudio, an open-source version of their popular commercial software, DreamStudio. Aimed at fostering collaboration and growth within the generative AI and art community, Stability AI has recently garnered investments from tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon.
The move towards an open-source and collaborative approach with StableStudio is rooted in the company’s desire to facilitate expansion and innovation within generative AI. Stability AI envisions working closely with the broader creative community, allowing it to better adapt and grow.
DreamStudio, Stability AI’s original software, began as an animation studio for Disco Diffusion before shifting its focus to image generation using the company’s flagship technology, Stable Diffusion. The software faced stiff competition from other platforms such as Midjourny and NightCafe, pushing the team to continually evolve and improve its offering.
In contrast to DreamStudio, StableStudio lacks the original software’s branding and account features, opting instead for a more streamlined and accessible experience. Additionally, StableStudio has implemented a plug-in system to allow users to directly access core functionality, rather than relying solely on backend API calls found in DreamStudio.
However, the release of StableStudio has drawn criticism from some who argue that moving to open-source could dilute Stability AI’s ability to monetize their efforts in the art, animation, biomedicine, and generative audio sectors.
Despite these concerns, Stability AI’s focus on research and development has only intensified in the past year, resulting in the improved generative image production found in Stable Diffusion 2.1. Furthermore, the CEO of Stability AI has hinted at the possibility of taking the company public through an initial public offering (IPO). This would be necessary as the company needs to generate revenue faster, despite raising over $100 million in venture capital funding.
Creative professionals and AI enthusiasts are encouraged to explore StableStudio and contribute to its development. As Stability AI continues to break ground in the generative AI and art space, it is certainly a company worth keeping a keen eye on for future innovations and breakthroughs.
