Over the course of the last decade, one of the most complex facets of artificial intelligence (AI) research has been the initiative to equip robotic counterparts with common sense – a crucial factor for embodied agents to process and execute instructions successfully. Not just the ability to perform tasks, but also to demonstrate independent judgment in unstructured environments.

The current Language-and-Logic Models (LLMs) have made significant strides in achieving this, allowing robots to understand language-based instructions and execute feasible action sequences. However, these models still grapple with challenges related to discrepancies in understanding the scene due to incomplete visual perceptions.

Enter the TAsk Planning Agent (TaPA), an innovative solution proposed by scholars at the Department of Automation and Beijing National Research Centre for Information Science and Technology. TaPA stands out for its exceptional ability to generate executable plans by aligning LLMs with visual perception models, adjusting to the available objects in the scene. This is achieved by fine-tuning the pre-trained Language-and-Logic Model Architecture (LLaMA) network using a multimodal dataset.

The generation of this multimodal dataset relies heavily on vision-language models and large multimodal models, marking the accord of language and vision for AI. Moreover, the lack of a large scale multimodal dataset was effectively addressed using Generative Pre-training Transformer 3.5 (GPT-3.5), a sophisticated language prediction model.

Researchers trained the task planner from the pre-trained LLMs and constructed a multimodal dataset using designed image collection strategies. In creating this dataset, clustering methods proved instrumental in dividing a scene into manageable sub-regions for heightened visual perception performance.

Despite the challenges encountered, implementing TaPA bore fruit, demonstrated by the remarkable results outperforming status quo LLMs like LLaMA and GPT-3.5. When pitted against large multimodal models like Language and Vision Advances (LLaVA), TaPA also proved more efficient.

The key enhancements noted include a reduction in hallucination cases, a better understanding of input objects, and an increased accuracy in executing tasks based on the given instructions. These improvements suggest the vast potential of TaPA in propelling the robotic decision-making process to a new frontier – a future where robots engage in tasks that demand the application of common sense.
