AWS’s initiative was spearheaded by two dynamic innovation hubs: The Generative AI Innovation Centre (GAIIC) and the ProServe ML Delivery Team (MLDT). Together, they addressed the requirement for an English language toxic speech detector capable of categorizing both voice and text excerpts into various types of inappropriate language—abusive, profane, or otherwise objectionable.

The backbone of this ambitious endeavour was Large Language Models (LLMs), data-driven systems that utilise natural language processing and machine learning to understand and generate text. The rationale for using LLMs was clear: their scalability and adaptability made them the ideal technology for the task at hand.

However, the journey was far from smooth. One of the major stumbling blocks was the lack of enough labeled data to train an accurate model from scratch. Although the data science community recommends using at least 1,000 samples for fine-tuning an LLM, the AWS team initially only had 100 samples at their disposal.

Adding to the complexity, natural language processing (NLP) classifiers are inherently difficult to develop. These machine learning models require extensive vocabulary sets to produce accurate predictions, significantly adding to the training costs and time.

Nevertheless, AWS Professional Services rose to the occasion, culminating in a comprehensive solution that bridged the gaps in data science and machine learning. By ingeniously circumventing limitations in training data and leveraging their expertise in NLP and ML, AWS was able to develop a robust detector that identified and categorized toxic speech efficiently.

Deployed in a production environment, the model’s effectiveness was put to the test real-time, guarding against inappropriate player interactions and flagging unsuitable content. This automation eased manual moderation efforts while greatly enhancing the quality of online discourse in the gaming sphere.
