Inclusive Open Source: All In Launches CHAOSS DEI Badging Initiative for Maintainers

As the open source community continues to grow exponentially, the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) cannot be overlooked. Recognizing this vital aspect of development, the All In for Maintainers initiative has set out to make the open source community more inclusive. To further this mission, the organization has launched the All In CHAOSS DEI Badging initiative, in partnership with the Community Health Analytics Open Source Software (CHAOSS) project.

The Need for All In CHAOSS DEI Badging Initiative

After conducting an extensive Listening Tour and survey, it became evident that the open source community was in dire need of a robust framework to identify and recognize DEI efforts. This led to the inception of the All In CHAOSS DEI Badging Initiative. The initiative aims to emphasize maintainers’ DEI efforts and recognize outstanding examples within the open source community.

What is the All In CHAOSS DEI Badging Initiative?

The All In CHAOSS DEI Badging Initiative is a program designed to help maintainers showcase their commitment to DEI in their projects. By collaborating with CHAOSS, the initiative enables maintainers to align their projects with recognized DEI metrics and create a better, more inclusive open source community.

Understanding the DEI.md File

A crucial component of the badging initiative is the DEI.md file. This file serves as a documentation of a project’s DEI efforts, highlighting four key CHAOSS DEI metrics:

  1. Project Access
  2. Communication Transparency
  3. Newcomer Experience
  4. Inclusive Leadership

Through the DEI.md file, maintainers engage in a reflective process evaluating their project’s DEI efforts and setting goals for further improvements. The file also fosters an open feedback loop for community comments and suggestions.

Applying for a DEI Badge

To apply for a Bronze-level DEI Badge, projects must have a DEI.md file in their repository that thoroughly addresses the four CHAOSS DEI metrics. An automatic scan of a project’s DEI.md file checks for appropriate and thoughtful language, while subsequent deeper scans evaluate the project’s repository as a whole and offer suggestions for improvement.

Getting Involved with the Initiative

Maintainers who wish to join the pilot program for the All In CHAOSS DEI Badging initiative can apply through the All In for Maintainers website. For those looking to support other facets of the All In for Maintainers program, additional opportunities for involvement are available.

Stay Updated on the Journey to Inclusive Open Source

The All In CHAOSS DEI Badging initiative not only acknowledges exceptional DEI efforts but also builds a unified and supportive open source community. The collaboration between All In for Maintainers and CHAOSS promises to bring about transformative change, creating an inclusive environment for developers of all backgrounds.

Stay tuned for updates and news on the initiative, and join the growing movement dedicated to making the open source community truly reflective of the diverse world we live in. With concerted effort and dedication, the goal of an inclusive and equitable open source community can become a reality.

Up until working with Casey, we had only had poor to mediocre experiences outsourcing work to agencies. Casey & the team at CJ&CO are the exception to the rule.

Communication was beyond great, his understanding of our vision was phenomenal, and instead of needing babysitting like the other agencies we worked with, he was not only completely dependable but also gave us sound suggestions on how to get better results, at the risk of us not needing him for the initial job we requested (absolute gem).

This has truly been the first time we worked with someone outside of our business that quickly grasped our vision, and that I could completely forget about and would still deliver above expectations.

I honestly can't wait to work in many more projects together!
