E-Commerce is a booming industry. With so many people using the internet to shop, it's no wonder that e-commerce platforms like eBay and Shopify have been growing in popularity!

What is Shopify?

Shopify is an online platform that allows sellers to create their own eCommerce store. Sellers can use the Shopify interface and templates or customize a design to make their store unique.

What is eBay?

eBay is one of the world's largest e-commerce stores. Sellers can list items for sale on eBay, and customers from around the world enjoy a variety of products, including Apparel, Footwear, Home Furnishing, Electronics, Jewelry, and more.

eBay users can sell both new and used items with fixed price listings and auction-style listings with bidding wars.

Difference between Shopify and eBay?

The two sites are quite different. While both offer users a platform to sell goods, they each have their pros and cons - let's take a closer look at them!

Shopify offers branding as an inbuilt option. You can have a personalized logo, colour scheme, design, and dedicated domain name.

eBay doesn't offer any such option for branding.

Product Pricing

Because your products appear on your domain, you won't have direct competitors' products showing up on your website. This means you can charge what you'd like for your products. Of course, people are often price-focused, so being competitive and having a solid USP (Unique Sales Proposition) is always good.

On the other hand, eBay is a search-based store where different price options are immediately apparent from other sellers, so you will need to set prices according to the market to increase click-through rates and purchases. Competition is high on eBay.


With Shopify, you can change the look and feel of your store to be unique!

On the other hand, eBay has a more basic interface with minimal customization options.

Customer Behaviour

In Shopify, you can track the behaviour of your customers using Apps. You can see what they do on your site, including clicks, scrolls, add to carts, contact form submissions and more.

On the other hand, eBay offers only feedback and reviews from customers. This can help gauge customer interest for a particular product or category of products.

Seller Protection

There can be instances when a scammer purchases a product and you receive a PayPal chargeback. eBay offers payment protection for sellers, and they will fight the case for you.

But, on Shopify, you are on your own and will have to appeal to PayPal regarding that chargeback. There are 3rd party fraud-prevention and insurance apps you can utilize to limit your liability.


Shopify has in-depth analytics. This shows you how your store is performing and how to improve it to boost sales and customer satisfaction. Also, you can use Google Analytics + other third-party tools like Hot Jar (Heatmap tracking) to get even more detailed Analytics. This can help you improve your store and lead to increased sales.

On the other hand, eBay offers limited information on customers within their dashboard.

Ease of use

eBay is a more straightforward platform to use because they have a more basic interface. You simply need to sign up and get started with listings.

Shopify has a learning curve. You will have to design the store yourself using Shopify themes. This can be a problem if you are not a developer, designer or marketer.


Shopify offers plenty of apps to choose from. You can find Apps for almost everything like shipping, accounting, inventory management, live chat, etc.

On the other hand, eBay offers things like shipping and inventory management inbuilt but doesn't provide Apps or Plugins to maximize efficiency.


Shopify offers complete control over your store. You can easily change the look and feel, list products, manage inventory, etc.

eBay doesn't offer much flexibility and control. This allows you to get started and manage things easily but is very limiting when compared to Shopify.


Dropshipping is allowed on both platforms, but you need to be more cautious on eBay as they have stringent policies.

On Shopify, you are on your own and not answerable to anyone but your customer.


Shopify is a good option if you need email opt-ins or if you want to send Push Notifications to your subscribers.

eBay doesn't offer any such option for marketing.


eBay offers an auction option where you can set a specific time duration for your listing, reserve price, and the highest bidder will get to buy that product.

On Shopify, there is no such option available inbuilt. However, there are apps available that you can use to list Auction Items.


Shopify offers an inbuilt blog, where you can post blogs, updates and make announcements.

eBay doesn't provide a blog option.


eBay is the world's largest online marketplace, with over 187 million active buyers around the globe. eBay has a large customer base which means that sellers like you can reach out to customers worldwide.

Shopify is just a store builder, and you will have to run ads or do SEO to get the traffic and sales.

With both companies offering different features for sellers, which platform should you choose? Ultimately, it comes down to what kind of store owner you are.

Shopify is the best option for:
1. People who want to establish a brand.
2. People who like more control over things.
3. People who want to publish blogs as well as products.
4. People who need detailed analytics.
5. People who want to avoid extra or hidden fees issues.

Which types of businesses should use eBay?

eBay is the best option for:
1. People who want to sell their goods and are not looking for many customization options.
2. People who are selling used or refurbished merchandise because eBay has such an established customer base.
3. People who don't want to spend time and money on Ad Campaigns or SEO to get traffic.
4. People who want to do a side hustle and don't need to be a 'brand'.
5. People who are testing some products before launching their brand.

Which types of businesses should use both?

As you have seen, both have their advantages and disadvantages. If you want to enjoy the benefits of both, you could use them together.

For example, if you need a huge customer base and want to build your brand with your own preferences, you should sell on both platforms.
