Revolutionizing the Energy Sector: Enel Transforms Power Grid Analysis with Machine Learning and Amazon Sagemaker

When it comes to innovation in energy sector operations, look no further than Enel, an Italy-based multinational power company, recognized to be a global player in the renewable energy sector with an impressive 55.4 GW of installed capacity spread across 32 countries.

Enel wields a novel approach to the annual inspection of its vast electricity distribution network. The meticulous process involves capturing millions of high-resolution photographs and generating three-dimensional images of their network using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology.

This extensive data collection forms the crux of monitoring the state of the power grid, spotting infrastructure anomalies, and keeping databases of installed assets up-to-date. The rigorousness of this process, however, is double-edged. While it ensures accuracy, the massive volume of data generated, with over 40 million images produced each year in Italy alone, presents a formidable challenge in manual interpretation and analysis.

In order to navigate this sea of data more efficiently, Enel recognized the potential of machine learning (ML) and deep learning to automate this expensive and error-prone manual process. The firm has thus inherently linked its future growth and progress with the cutting-edge field of artificial intelligence.

The company has built an ML platform on Amazon SageMaker. This platform facilitates model building and training across various business units, unlocking new horizons of operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The integration of machine learning has significantly expedited Enel’s power grid inspections.

Enel primarily collects data and imagery from two distinct sources: aerial network inspections backed by LiDAR point clouds and satellite images. LiDAR point clouds provide precise 3D reconstructions, translating to high accuracy in data analysis. They are paired with high-resolution images that help identify elements and anomalies overlooked by the point cloud due to size constraints.

On the other hand, power line inspections using satellite images exhibit limitations due to their resolution and quality. While they provide broad spatial overview and are cost-effective, the resolution often lacks the necessary detail for accurate analysis.

Despite these hurdles, Enel’s efforts have forged a new pathway that harnesses ML technologies to revolutionize the energy sector. As the power industry continues to evolve, Enel serves as a testament to the transformative potential of artificial intelligence.

Enlivening the vision and dedication behind this transformation, Mario Namtao Shianti Larcher, Head of Computer Vision at Enel, states, “Our commitment to machine learning and deep learning has empowered us to automate and refine our processes, paving the way for a new era in the energy sector.”

As other companies follow suit to embrace these technologies, one thing is clear – the energy sector’s future is streamlined, efficient, and brighter than ever. Looking ahead, it is evident that Enel’s enterprising spirit and technological prowess are setting a dominant pace in the ongoing integration of artificial intelligence in the energy sector.

Up until working with Casey, we had only had poor to mediocre experiences outsourcing work to agencies. Casey & the team at CJ&CO are the exception to the rule.

Communication was beyond great, his understanding of our vision was phenomenal, and instead of needing babysitting like the other agencies we worked with, he was not only completely dependable but also gave us sound suggestions on how to get better results, at the risk of us not needing him for the initial job we requested (absolute gem).

This has truly been the first time we worked with someone outside of our business that quickly grasped our vision, and that I could completely forget about and would still deliver above expectations.

I honestly can't wait to work in many more projects together!
